MICHELE’s GRADUATE STORY

NAME: Michele Deluca

FROM: British Columbia

PROGRAM:  Sustainable Building & Design

In 2017, I drove across the country to take the 6-month Sustainable New Construction program with Endeavour. I had no prior building experience, and with my nine classmates we built the Zero House. It was one of the most empowering experiences of my life. From there, hooked on natural building, I headed to Moab, Utah, to participate as an intern with Community Rebuilds. Over the course of five months I helped build three straw bale houses, alongside the homeowners and an amazing group of interns and instructors.

Upon returning to my hometown in BC after my time in Moab, I worked as a carpenter on a ten-unit housing development, building small scale, energy efficient homes. This time allowed me to experience the pace and expectations of a “real” construction site – I learned a LOT (and also missed the lack of on-site dance parties).

Once that project finished, I wanted to focus more specifically on green building, and am now doing energy modeling and consulting for new construction. It’s an exciting job because the building industry is finally starting to acknowledge its role in addressing climate change – but there’s a long way to go! My hope is to bring more attention to embodied carbon and indoor air pollutants from building materials.

I can sincerely say that Endeavour was the first step in propelling me to my dream career!
